not easy being green

Ain’t that the truth, eh, Kermie!?

And it’s funny because I’ve always thought of myself as being pretty eco-conscious seeing as I’m a) VEGAN and b) recycle.  But apparently I’m not quite as “green” as I like to think I am.  And I’m definitely nowhere near living a “zero waste” life (whatever that even means, right?)  Hell, I don’t even own a compost bucket let alone bring my own mug to Starbucks. Frightening Fact: FOUR BILLIONS Starbucks to-go cups get tossed out EVERY YEAR!

Needless to say, we were super excited to have the girls from “A Dream Lived Greener” as guests on the podcast this week.  But alas, they had to cancel last minute and without anything else prepared, Sarah and I were forced to forge ahead with a “no waste” episode anyway. 🙂

So instead of asking for answers to our many questions, we quizzed ourselves on how “green” we even are and did our own research on garbage and what exactly it takes to produce as little of it as possible.

zero waste green living vegan podcast

Apparently most of us produce a whopping 3 lbs. of garbage every single day!  And interestingly enough, we consume about 3 – 5 lbs. of food every day….

And sure, we mindful meatheads do usually recycle and try to compost as much as possible.

But sadly, most of our garbage gets broken down into teeny, tiny microscopic pieces that don’t fully degrade EVER.  And guess where they end up?  In our lakes, our rivers and our oceans.  And yup, they’re seriously fucking up the aquatic life that inhabit these bodies of water AND fucking ourselves up because even as vegans, we’re still eating seaweed and sea vegetables!  Side note: be sure to read my latest blog post all about the toxic chemicals we’re exposing ourselves to which are seriously messing up our hormones.

It’s a scary and fascinating topic nonetheless.  And one we’re excited to discuss (despite not having an expert interview).  So hit that “play” button and come along as we delve into what exactly it takes to live a “no waste” lifestyle and how we can do our part to protect our ecosystems and of course, our own health too.

We’re also challenging each other (and our listeners) to a one week attempt at producing no garbage whatsoever.  And at the end of this challenge, we’re even cooking up our accumlated food “waste” for the other sister to consume as part of a YouTube “Fear Factor” Eat My Waste special video.  So stay tuned for that little gem! 🙂

Haha my “waste” is still frozen in my freezer. We better figure it soon though because apparently you guys really want us to eat each other’s waste. And I want that shit outta my freezer!! 🙂
