Podcast #10: Sugar Detox Results and Recap

Podcast #10: Sugar Detox Results and Recap

I’m sure the anticipation has been killing you but our one-week sugar detox experiment is finally over (thank God) and you might be surprised to learn which Shorkey sister finished strong and which one failed miserably.

Apparently giving up sugar was a lot harder than we anticipated (even for those of us who’ve been on strict diets for many, many years.) And I can only say in my defense that I simply didn’t want to **completely** restrict myself because I do believe that banning entire foods or food groups only leads to that unhealthy “all or nothing” mentality which loves to keep us on that yo-yo diet roller coaster ride from HELL. And in all honesty, I’m OVER IT!

That’s my excuse for cheating on the sugar detox anyway…

In this recap episode, we also discover that apparently all three of us (Sam, Sarah and Erin) are severely addicted to coffee even more than sugar. Perhaps a future podcast episode/Shorkey detox experiment?

I also share the potential negative side effects of consuming too much stevia and our fave “sugar craving sweet buster” snack that really helped get us through the week.

phallic banana

Yeah that’s my hand. #GripStrength.

Anyway, I’m also dying to know how all of our participating listeners did in the “sugar experiment” so please comment below if you got in on the sugar detox action and if you had more discipline than I did.

Oh hiii Sarah! LOL I’m literally replying after a month. Yes, we are definitely soulmates. :D
I have to tell you that I’ve returned to my usual, coffee with almond milk in an 1:2 ratio plus 3 teaspoons of agave routine. I love maple syrup but compared to agave it’s not sweet enough and I….end up putting 6 teaspoons from that (insert shameful emoji here). So I stayed with agave. BUT I’m still keeping my 72 hrs in between covfefes.
Guess what: I’ve found a VEGAN iced coffee which does NOT have sugar in it and it tastes amazing imo!!!
(I almost cried when I’ve found it because back when I used to be vegetarian and an omnivore before that, I drank a lot of iced coffees…the joys when you found vegan versions of your favourite things) I’m sorry for making you excited in vain though because I think it’s only in Europe: https://www.lattesso.com/drinks/vegan/
But I thought it’s important to tell you because we might just have hope. Is the secret in the type of the coffee or in the rice milk?
Anyway I’m going to think of you when I’ll buy up the whole stock from the shop this weekend. To honour you I’m going to drink it while listening to you guys!

Wow, Gostika. You might just be my soulmate. Oddly enough, Sam has suggested doing a coffee detox episode and I’ve been like, “hell, no! Can’t I have SOMETHING???” HAHAHA! Truth be told, I have given up coffee a couple of times in the past and it was actually because I tried to drink it without sugar. 2 for 1! Sadly, like every other junkie…it pulls me back in. Maybe one day I can be persuaded, though. Hmmm…

I know that this podcast was posted more than 2 years ago but I don’t care. :) I just listened to it today.

I feel with Sarah so much. I CANNOT drink coffee without sugar (first it was sugar, then it was maple syrup, now it’s agave. but I’m thinking to bring back the maple) and almond milk. I tried so many times, it just doesn’t work for me.
However, I am not a coffee addict anymore. I’ve realized that I’m a powerless zombie every morning until I drink my coffee. But this only happens if I drink coffee every day. I detoxed myself from coffee several times. The latest was earlier this year. I didn’t drink coffee for 2 weeks. Symptoms on the first 1-5 days: headache, irritability, sleepiness, tiredness… It was terrible but it was totally worth it (lots of water and green smoothie are my saviours). And imagine, that I had these symptoms after consuming only ONE coffee per day. Now I only drink coffee every 72hrs, this way I don’t get addicted to it and I have MUCH more energy. I have to make notes in my calendar tho, not to forget when I had my last covfefe. And on the coffee-ness days, whenever I feel tired or sleepy I check on my water consumption for the day (I have a mobile app for this btw).
It might sound funny, but it works for me! I don’t get addicted this way and I don’t feel guilty anymore about the ~1 tablespoon of agave that I put in it (yeah yeah…if something is sweet, for me it has to be VERY sweet ¯\(ツ)/¯) (and now I only drink it on the weekends since I am taking Ritalin but that’s another story – hello Sarah, I have OCD and I LOVE to organize too LOL).

I also had a green tea phase for some years and to my surprise I had the SAME withdrawal symptoms when I stopped to drink that (let me note that I drink coffee and green tea VERY strong though).

Don’t you want to try a caffeine detox? And tell about your results afterwards in a podcast episode? Sorry if there is already a podcast regarding this, I’m listening to them in order :)

Ps. I want to try this legendary Nanaimo bar!!!! :)

At least one of you made it. I got about as far as Erin did. LOL!

  • Sarah: August 14, 2017

If you quit caffeine, Celeste, you will become my new hero!

  • Sam: July 29, 2017

Hi Celeste!!! Awww thank you. That’s awesome!! We absolutely LOVE recording the podcast so it’s cool to know other people dig it too :) Also, you’ll be pleased to know that after my research on stevia, I cut it out completely and I’m now on day 5 no stevia or artificial sweeteners and I definitely notice better digestion and wayyyyyy less bloating and farting! And it really is true that since I cut it out, I’m actually really enjoying the REAL taste of a finely-ground, medium-roast organic coffee with steamed almond milk. In fact, I’m drinking one right now whilst I plan this week’s “poop podcast.” Standby and thanks for the support :)

  • Celeste: July 28, 2017

Oh my gosh! I think since competing I became total addict to artificial sweeteners including stevia which as research now supports means higher chance of weight gain because of those wanting neuro-receptors that never get their glucose hit and eventually find real sugar and go crazy! I totally want to try a total detox and honestly should have jumped on board. My plan though is to buy unsweetened sunwarrior, use banana and retrain my taste buds. I’ll start Monday, haha! Maybe… I’d rather quit, caffeine @ Sarah! And great job btw on your week! Love you guys’ podcast. You crack me up as I laugh at how true these episodes, 1 & 2 were!

  • Sam: August 14, 2017

Well I’m proud to say that since the sugar detox episodes ended, I’ve actually been successful on a “no sugar” kick for a couple of weeks now! Apparently when no one is paying attention, I CAN do it. Go figure!
